CREDA South Florida is a recognized voice for the commercial real estate industry, advocating at the local and state level to support policies that promote growth, fairness, and economic opportunity.

Who We Are

In partnership with NAIOP Florida—a coalition of the state’s five CREDA chapters—we engage with policymakers and regulatory agencies to influence commercial real estate legislation and regulation across the state.

With two seats on NAIOP CREDA’s 10-member board, CREDA South Florida plays a leadership role in setting the statewide legislative agenda, ensuring that local concerns are front and center in Tallahassee.

Legislative Priorities

Full Elimination of the Business Rent Tax (BRT)

Florida was the only state to levy sales tax on commercial leases, including rent and CAM charges. Since 2012, CREDA has championed efforts to reduce and eventually eliminate this tax—culminating in a major 2025 victory that fully repealed the BRT, saving Florida businesses over $1.65 billion annually.

Streamlined Commercial Lease Execution

In response to the COVID-19 crisis, NAIOP helped pass HB 469, which eliminated outdated witness requirements for commercial leases. Since July 2020, leases in Florida can be digitally executed, making transactions faster and more efficient for both landlords and tenants.

Opposing Costly Linkage Fees & Mandates

CREDA successfully supported legislation (HB 7103 & HB 1339) to prevent local governments from unfairly targeting commercial projects with fees and requirements related to affordable housing. These laws now require any added costs to be offset through incentives like:
